March – Now’s the time! PLANT!
- Green Bean Connection!
The first week of March get ‘em in! Beans, tomatoes, artichokes from transplants, corn, New Zealand spinach, cucumbers, summer and winter squash! If you have room and want to, plant the last rounds of cool-season crops like broccoli (with cilantro & lettuce), cabbage, potatoes. Add more year-rounds, beets, carrots, chard, radish, turnips. Remember to leave space for your succession plantings!
Wait until next month to plant your true heat lovers – eggplant, limas, melons, okra, peppers and pumpkins. That means if you haven’t already, get those babies started in the greenhouse to get a head start! Border your plot with herbs! That’s easy access for quick picking on your way out of the garden for fresh herbs for your table or cook pot. Basil with your tomatoes, dill with your cucs, marjoram, oregano, parsley, sage, savory, thyme. In a large space at home plant rosemary; plant mint in a pot so it won’t go everywhere you don’t want it to!
This is the time to put your mycorrhiza fungi to work! One of the great things mycorrhiza does is assist Phosphorus uptake. Of the N-P-K on fertilizers, P is Phosphorus that helps roots and flowers grow and develop.
Special idea! Plant flowers, chamomile for tea, poppy for seeds, veggie starts (hot peppers), to give as Mother’s Day living gifts! That’s 10 weeks from now. Plant a little extra all the time for ready gifts for any occasion!
